Top UK beef farmer to speak at series of four NBA meetings in Wales next month

The National Beef Association (NBA) has teamed up with Farming Connect to offer four meetings in Wales next month, all including a presentation from award-winning Northern Irish beef farmer Sam Chesney.

Sam is the current Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year and runs a suckler herd of 150 Limousin crosses at Kircubbin, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. He is also actively involved in the beef supply chain through his role as Director of Strangford Down Co-operative, selling cattle and sheep and buying feed and other inputs for farmer members.

His interest in agricultural policy and regulations sees him represent farmers at DARD meetings on behalf of NBA Northern Ireland, while his commitment to technical efficiency means he is also an AgriSearch Board Member, Ulster Grassland Board Member and Young Farmer Ambassador.

On the farm his priorities include paddock grazing and a strong belief in the benefits of clover, as well as a commitment to herd health and driving down production costs – all making him a popular DARD Focus Farmer for other NI producers to pick up tips from at regular farm open days.

He will be speaking at four events, which will take place over two days in early February:-

Monday 6th February
• 11am at Hendreseifion, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 8QQ.
• 7.30pm at Bishops Meadow, Hay Road, Brecon LD3 9SW.

Tuesday 7th February
• 11am at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Glynllifon, Clynnog Road, LL54 5DU.
• 7.30pm at The Oriel Hotel, Upper Denbigh Road, St. Asaph, Denbighshire, LL17 0LW.

Sam’s talk will focus on CAP reform and his vision for profitable suckler beef enterprises in the future. The NBA will also be giving an update on CAP reform and its potential impact, with Assistant Director Joanne Pugh providing a quick overview of the current situation.

Each meeting is free of charge and open to all farmers in Wales and the Borders, be they a NBA member or not. Refreshments are being generously provided by Farming Connect. No advance registration is required.
