Beef Expo 2013 dates announced, with new chairman already making big plans for a spectacular beef industry event.

The National Beef Association (NBA) has announced that Beef Expo 2013 will be held on Thursday, May 23rd, with the usual farm tours and other activities happening the day before. It will be hosted by the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire, for the second year running, before moving to a prominent northern location in 2014.

The NBA is absolutely thrilled that Neil Lloyd of Stonycroft Farm, Luston, Herefordshire, has agreed to take on the mantle of 2013 Chairman – and is already impressed by the big plans he has for the event.

Mr Lloyd says: “I want to take what was an excellent event in 2012 but enhance it and make it better again – I really want to step it up a gear. It’s going to be a challenge but I’m sure the 2013 Organising Committee will be up to the task.

“We’re going to be focussing more heavily on machinery than we did this year, and also on food. I want to look at the production chain from the beginning right to the end. We rear claves, take them through to finishing and send them to the slaughterhouse but what happens then? Where is our beef going? As an industry, we need to be more focussed on the end product, because it should influence everything we do on the farm, from genetics to feeding, animal husbandry to marketing.”

Mr Lloyd runs an 80-acre farm and makes the most of this space by focussing on elite British Blue and Limousin genetics, as well as Texel and Blue Texel sheep. He has won nearly every major fatstock show in the UK and also runs a show livery business to present other people’s cattle in the showring. He also specialises in running production and reduction sales, while operating a forage contracting and dealing business, baling 20,000 silage and straw bales and buying/selling another 10,000 hay and straw bales annually. He also finishes up to 60 dairy bulls each year, all of which he could not do without wife Sally and their three sons, Tom (21), Joe (19) and Ted (7).

Mr Lloyd, who was chairman of the National Spring Spectacular Show at the 2012 Beef Expo, lives about 30 miles from the Three Counties Showground and believes it is a superb site for Beef Expo. He is also enthusiastic about the benefits of running the event in the same location for two years.

He says: “We have the knowledge now of what works at Malvern and what needs rethinking. We will keep much of what we had this year but also know what potential there is for adding more to the event, such as live demonstrations. We rely on the support of breed societies, trade exhibitors and visitors and promise them it will be well worth their time coming back to the Three Counties Showground in 2013.”
