FMD Update - Thursday 13th Sept 07 - DAY 1

13th September 2007

Region: National

FMD Update Thursday 13th Sept. Day 1

The IP in Surrey is outside the previous SZ and as yesterday was 40 days from the previous outbreak, this is a new outbreak and today is Day 1.

The IP is a suckler herd finishing his own product. He has grazing on several different places (7 probably); most of these are close by but one is further off and this is why the PZ is an odd shape.

Footpaths are closed in the PZ.
Dairy cows are being allowed to move for milking
Animals are allowed to move within holding for veterinary treatment on welfare grounds.

Tracing of movements out of the PZ will take a little time and finding all the animals in the PZ and SZ will be a major task again as we are still in a ‘lifestyle and pet’ area.

If you have received animals from the PZ or SZ please inform your Animal Health Office. If you know of pet animals in the SZ please get the owners to contact the animal health office.

The virus type should be known by tonight and age of lesions in the cattle will be known by tonight.

Biosecurity, vigilance and the standstill are critical if we are to control this outbreak quickly.
